A new “Karate Kid”?

Is it just me or is Hollywood really running out of ideas?

I will admit that remakes are a staple of Hollywood. However, it seems like Hollywood is remaking movies sooner and sooner after they are released. Heck, there was a “remake” of the Hulk film only five years after the first one was released.

Now, the town is starting to go after the movies that our generations have grown up with.

First up on the hit list is The Karate Kid.

This was a great coming of age, fish out of water story, especially for those that identified Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio). The brash young guy who is actually insecure and is looking for a way to get back at his tormentors.

And who could forget Mr. Miyagi’s (Pat Morita) wisdom of “wax on, wax off”? And finally having our hero overcome adversity and deliver that devestating kick at the end to win the karate tournament – even though it was totally ridiculous that a move like that would actually work, much less in the championship round of a tournament.

From what I’ve seen of the new movie, the only thing that remains the same is the fish out of water plot. Mom has been moved for work and young son has to tag a long and find himself.

In the remake, Jaden Smith (yes, that’s Will Smith’s kid) plays the part of the hero. Oh, and he’s 10 years old, not a high schooler. Jackie Chan plays the Mr. Miyagi character.

A trailer for the movie was recently released and can be found here.

Did I mention that this is set in China? Shouldn’t this movie be called The Kung Fu Kid?

What do you think? Will this movie be box office gold or will it go down in flames?
