What We’re Reading

Hi Everyone! It’s getting colder outside. It’s the perfect season to curl up with a blanket, a warm cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate and a good book.

I recently discovered  the  MTV Book Club blog. Musicians from bands like Gaslight Anthem, Against Me!,  Semi Precious Weapons, and Metric (to name a few) talk about a book they’ve enjoyed or are influenced by. Musicians + Books = Two of My Favorite Things.

Another site, Mr. Hipster, has a great list of books with reviews that are short and to the point.

I have personally just read Her Fearful Symmetry byAudrey Niffenegger. Well, I listened to it on audio in my car and read when I was at home. I think this possibly helped set the tone for me because the story takes place in London, hearing the character’s voice in the lovely accent. (Another thing I like about audio is hearing the pronunciation of a character’s name that I have never heard before.) I loved The Time Traveler’s Wife and heard that many people who also loved it were disappointed with this one. Even now, after waiting a little over a year to read it, the book still has mixed reviews.  I had no idea what the book was about.  I picked up the book thinking that I will probably hate this, but ended up staying up until almost 5 a.m. one night because I could not put it down and had to finish it. I really enjoy the way Audrey writes. I do think that it wasn’t as far as a jump from The Time Traveler’s Wife as you might think. I would give it 4 stars for predictability where I rate TTW 5 stars. When other works of literature are referenced in a book, I usually tend to check them out as well. The story Blithe Spirit was mentioned in this book. Serendipitously, the film adaptation (1945) of a play, showed up on netflix streaming! I enjoyed this and thought it was a great reference to the book. Recently, I find myself checking youtube to see if there are any interviews with the author after I read the book.  I’ve come to the realization that  I enjoy books about twins. (Could it have something to do with those Sweet Valley books as a child? Maybe?) So far, I Know This Much Is True, about a set of twins,  is my favorite book by Wally Lamb.

This Saturday, November 20, our X Meets Y Book Club is discussing High Fidelity at Starbucks at 2 p.m. We will be announcing our January – March book selections soon. Hope to see you there!Either way, Happy Reading!
